Sunshine to Dollars is a very cool book, it has a great balance of theory with how to advice. I haven’t followed any of the plans in the book my self, but I have used all the concepts to enhance existing projects, and to design new ones.

I really like the concepts in this book, particularly the idea that it is more efficient to use the heat energy of the sun directly – rather than turn the energy into power to be used to create heat later…

The author, Harris, is well known in the preparedness and sustainable living worlds.  He is a frequent presenter and speaker and has written a lot of books of use toward off grid living.  Solar power happens to be his best topic, but I have also enjoyed his work with ethanol fuel production, and plan to give workshops on homestead fuel production at Dual Homestead as soon as I can qualify for a license.

The only thing I have against Sunshine to Dollars is that it took things Harris did, but that may not be available to everyone, and suggest they are universal how-tos.

His example on how to get free solar panels is the most prominent.  I admit his method is ingenious, but I found that after a couple years of trying, it is not quite that easy.

As you can guess, my wife thinks I experiment too much in the kitchen, she may appreciate THAT I cook, but she has a hard time appreciating WHAT I cook.

However, every once in a while I will hold my mouth right and make something she rules fit to make again.

Eggs Sunshine is one of those maker again recipes.

This recipe is a very basic breakfast meal that is easy enough to allow kids to cook (with supervision), and while it is not a “food storage meal” per se, it uses ingredients that are easily made from food storage ingredients (the bread), and/or easily produced or traded for (eggs).

In this recipe your simply pan toasting a slice of bread in a skillet. The bread has the center cut out to hold a raw egg.

As the bread toasts the egg fries and it is a novel way of making breakfast.

I used to butter the bread, and always made a mess buttering the second side. Now I normally use a small amount of oil to get the same effect.

I also use a shot glass to punch out the center (after letting it fry a second) – which is both prettier and easier than my old method of cutting out a square with a knife.

We would probably fight over the toasted centers of bread, except whenever I am home early enough to make breakfast, it is Genny’s day off so she is asleep and I don’t share….

As I talked about in an earlier post I love cooking egg sunshine on the weekend, well I figure if the recipe is good with toast, how would it be with meat?  With a burning desire to know (and to have breakfast) – I created Sausage Sunshine.

I simply made large patties out of a roll of sausage, and used a small mason jar to cut out a circle in the center, and then cooked it in a skillet with an egg cracked in the center.

Sausage Sunshine was VERY good, but I did learn two things, the patty needs to be thin and the sausage should be cooked for a little while before adding the egg or otherwise the egg will be under cooked or the sausage overcooked.

This is a great recipe to fuel a day out working on the homestead, but it is a little rich to sit around watching TV.
