I’m no lawyer, so check this yourself.  My understanding is that as long as you can legally own a rifle you can make one for your own use.  But you can’t build them with the intent to resale.  Additionally, the firearm you build must meet the legal guidelines in your area.   (i.e no 3 inch anti-aircraft guns).

If you can do so legally, building your own rifle is a very worthwhile experience.  In this post we will show how we completed our own AR-15 lower build for much cheaper than what the same rifle would have cost already assembled.

When I bought my stripped AR-15 Lower Receiver, I had to give my $10 background check and thumbprint just like I was buying a functional firearm.  According to BATFE, a receiver is considered a firearm even if it is is not functional.  All the other parts are just “accessories”.

This is the second AR-15 lower I have built.  It took me less than an hour.  I did not have any specialty tools to make it easier.  I would say that this is a simple project if you have good instructions.

You Can get Good Information from Military Manuals

You can use the military technical manual (TM-9-1005-319-23&P) but remember its for M-16s so some of the fire control parts will look different because your rifle is semi-automatic.  A simple search search on the internet for AR-15 construction guides will help.  Also you can always buy a book on the AR-15 in your local bookstore.

TM 9-1005-249-14 is the operator manual for the M16 Rifle.  Like the technical manual, it is not exactly the AR-15, but it is close enough to work

In our free downloads section I have a good amount of manuals and blueprints for the  AR-15/M-16.  I post them with the hope the manuals will help you.  I suggest you visit AR-15.com and look in their forums as they have great step by step instructions.

Some Things Need to Be Done in Order

Some steps can be done in any order, and some pins can be installed from either side, but some steps need to be done in sequence, and certain pins need to be placed a specific way, so be sure you get a decent set of instructions and follow them.

I build my own lowers for two reasons, the first is cost.  I save about 100 dollars (sometimes more) by DIYing them, but I also like the feeling of taking MY gun to the range.  By putting one together you learn a lot about your rifle which makes troubleshooting and repair a lot easier.

I had to split up the video into two parts and seriously cut it for time, as youtube has a strict 10 minute video policy.  Also for those that get torqued over someone calling a magazine a clip, there are several occasions where I misspoke a part name, you make me nervous….

    Part 1 of 2

Magazine Catch, Trigger Guard, Bolt Catch Assembly, Pivot Pin Assembly

    Part 2 of 2

52 Unique Techniques for Stocking Food for Prepper

I am quite happy with my cardboard can organizers.  They have survived a couple moves and several years of can foods being stored in them.  However, they are sized for normal sized cans.

I still need something for can drinks, tuna cans, and tomato paste cans.

Here is a good tip for those odd sized cans.

As soon as I saw a picture on pinterest of someone using a Magazine Rack for Can Storage I knew it was worth exploring.

To be honest, I still like my cardboard can organizer better, and finding the right sized magazine racks can be a chore, but this does work well.  It is probably also sturdier over time than the cardboard can organizers.  I know it would move better if you aren’t someone that stays in one place.

I hope you find it to be useful.

If you have other tips or things you would like to share or see tried out.  Please feel free to contact me.  I am always looking for good ideas to share.  I probably just need to spend more time on Pinterest, but since most of the good ideas are on mom sites, I have to be sure my wife doesn’t think I am out looking for the wrong stuff.

Here are some of my favorite gun magazines, I have subscribed to all of them at one point or another, and look for them at the newsstand when I know I am going to have a slow day and have some time to site and leaf through them.

Subscribing saves a lot of money over buying them at the newsstand – and some (like shotgun news can save you a lot of money).

I enjoy gun magazines quite a bit, the articles always give me something to think about, and I love looking at the new guns pictured in them.  I am leery of the reviews though as I tend to see ads for guns in the same article where they review them (except magazines like gun tests).

I am not a Glock Fanboy that thinks nothing beats a Glock.  But the Glock has its place in the tool chest.

I understand them and how to make them work better.

One thing I do not like about Glocks are their magazine release button.  This post show Glock magazine catch replacement with parts from larger Glocks so that the catch is easier to use.

The first through third generations of Glocks have a short and small magazine release (the gen-4 has a magazine release button 3x the size of the others and needs no replacement).

You can buy aftermarket extended magazine release, but if you have a compact Glock, the equivalent caliber full size model’s magazine release is bigger and will work perfectly as an extended release.

Using an OEM part will be much cheaper than using aftermarket parts. – This might not be factory, but it is something the factory is aware of, and they basically did the same thing with the Gen-4 guns.

I learned about this “trick” for Glock magazine catch replacement from the actual factory Glock armorer school so this is not some redneck trick like sanding down the Glock connecter as a “trigger job”

    Shooting: Glock Magazine Disassembly Tip

Not everyone cleans their pistol magazines, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need attention. Personally, I used to neglect my pistol magazines.  This was because I had a hard time getting the baseplates off of my Glock magazines.

This post shows an easy trick to help with Glock Magazine Disassembly

They have a detent button in the center of the baseplate.    Once depressed, the plate is “supposed” to slide off – unfortunately I never have it that simple.

Luckily, I was shown a way that makes disassembling a Glock magazine very simple.

    Use the Glock Armorer’s Tool!

    • Insert the tool all the way in until it stops at the handle.
    • Push the tool (with the baseplate sliding) forward. You want to leverage the plate forward using the handle of the Glock tool.
    • Unless you like searching for parts or getting smacked in the face by a flying spring, use your hand to cover the bottom of the magazine before you slide the baseplate completely off.

This does take some practice, but believe me, once you understand how to take the magazines apart using a punch you will find the process much easier.  I have never been able to consistently get the mags apart without using this tip.
