This DIY Wire Basket is a neat project, which makes a useful basket – which you can use to organize or meet some

metalworking requirements on a scouting merit badge.

I like them for gardening, as I can easily wash my fruit and vegetables off with the hose before I bring them in the house.

My wife likes it because I use it to wash vegetables before I bring them into the house.

Either way, it is an easy project that is very useful and a fun way to spend an afternoon.

    Material:

    • 2’x10’ Hardware cloth
    • 26 Gauge Floral wire
    • Metal Coat hanger (Optional)
    • Rubber hose (Optional)

    Tools:

    • Tin Snips
    • Needle nose pliers

    Procedure:

    1. When designing your basket you need to allow for the sides. We are going to make a 5 inch deep 8 by 8 inch basket to carry in our vegetables. Since the sides will fold up we will need to cut out a piece of wire that is 18 inches square.
    1. Using tin snips cut this into a cross shape with 5 inch squares taken out of each corner. This will make eight inch “wings” that stick out on each of the 4 sides.
    1. Make your creases/folds along the “wings”

    2. Cut the floral wire 1.5x the size of the side you’re going to connect. This means for a 5 inch seam, cut the wire 7.5 inches (or 8 if you want extra).
    1. Start at one end, and pull the wire almost all the way through leaving about 1″ of slack to wrap around that first corner several times before weaving up the side.
      • Hitting every square looks better, and make a stronger basket, but you can save time by only weaving every other square if you desire.
    2. Lastly, trim the ends of your wire, and tidy up the basket.
    3. If you desire you can make handles by cutting up a metal coat hanger and using needle nose pliers to create loops on each end
    4. You can make the handle fit your hand better by sliding a rubber hose (like an aquarium hose) over the coat hanger before attaching it to the basket.

How to Make a Hot Wire Cutter

I have wanted to build a hot wire cutter for some time.  Once I found out that Styrofoam could be used to make patterns for aluminum casting.

This is because it would burn out in a manner similar to lost wax casting.  I knew it was just a matter of time before I had to have one.

Since I got back on a pyro video bug and bought some nichrome wire to make rocket ignition squibs.

I decided now would be a perfect time to also use it to build a DIY hot wire cutter.

This was a very simple project that only took a few minutes time, and was built out of scrap I had laying around.

Once my DIY Hot Wire Cutter was finished, the boy and I had a grand time slicing up leftover Christmas Present packaging.

My wife was not pleased at all the scraps and chunks of white Styrofoam.

Eventually, even the boy said it was “too stinky”, but it has promise and I am already planning out new projects and enhancements to my small cutter.

I used this diy hot wire cutter to help insulate my shipping container.  However, I made it so I can use Styrofoam to cast aluminum.

This goes to show having skills and making stuff can always come in handy.

    Gear Review: Contour Camera

I recently purchased a contour +2 action camera to use in my video production.  I bought it because it was small, durable, had an external mic jack, streamed wireless to my phone, was water proof, and had a built in GPS.  So it only figures that I would do a post on a Contour Camera Review

When I got it, I found that it was oversold just a little bit – it has an HDMI out port – which they say allows it to be used as a webcam to apple computers – but the laptop I have is HDMI out only, so it will not work to tape my classes.

The video is a little jump as it has a low frame rate, and the lens makes everything look a little walleyed.

However, it comes with a waterproof case for scuba and snorkeling activities, and a bunch of different mounts – if I was using this solely as a gun cam, I would be very happy, as it is smaller and has more features than the go-pro.

Because I wanted a good quality camera with an external mic jack and I wanted to stay under $1000.00 I allowed myself to be taken by all the hoopla around this camera.  I guess sionce I have a waterproof case I can finannyl start working on shooting the Glock underwater…
