Like many of the recipes I share on this site, this is not a “food storage recipe” exactly, but many of the ingredients can be found in food storage, or adapted from food storage. But just because it needs adapting, does not mean it is not useful.

The concept and method of making an easy dump cake in a Dutch Oven over a fire can come in very handy in an off-grid situation, as well as make a fine dessert to eat around the fire while out camping (aka practicing your bug out skills)…

Once you make a dutch oven dump cake you will be ho0ked.  This dump cake recipe is easy, tasty, and cheap.

Last year I made an Pecan Apple Caramel Dump Cake in a dutch oven inside a $30 kettle smoker and won first place statewide Annual BBQ contest for corrections in TN.  The dump cake was entered into the “anything goes” category.

I could not believe how easy this recipe was to adapt and use in a BBQ grill.  I do know the Dump Cake tasted Awesome.

If you want an even better recipe than the one below, add some pecans stir fried in butter, a can of homemade caramel “dulce de leche”, and fresh apples in an apple pie filling for the BEST Apple Dump Cake ever.

Ingredients for a Dutch Oven Dump Cake

  • Butter
  • 2 (16 oz.) cans of fruit pie filling (your choice)
  • 1 box cake mix (your choice)
  • 1/2 C. Water

Procedure

  • Butter the inside and bottom of the lid of a Dutch oven.
  • Next pour the pie filling in the Dutch oven.
  • “Dump” in the cake mix.

Mason Jar Straw Lid Review

Gear Review: Mason Jar Straw Lid

My wife got into a no BPA phase, and since I agree that BPA is bad when ingested, and I love buying new gadgets I jumped with her and landed with both feet in the gadget aisle of the store.

We started using glass mason jars for all sorts of stuff, from salad containers, to salt shakers, to cup (well I am Southern so mason jar glasses is not new).

One thing we found is a Mason Jar Straw Lid.  This was awesome as the boy loves drinking out of a straw.

Actually, he mostly likes blowing bubbles in his milk through a straw.  However, the lid keeps the bubbles in the jar.

Kitchen DIY: Use an Egg Slicer to Slice Strawberries

This is an easy tip that is pretty self evident.  I sometimes have to cut up strawberries into slices.  Most often for my brandied strawberries.  I don’t like doing it, so I use an egg slicer to slice strawberries.

The process is stupidly simple, and it takes no time at all to do.  However, a strawberry is a little harder to slice than an egg, so you may want to stay away from the cheapest level of egg slicers.

I like an all metal version like the one pictured.  I find they are just a little stronger and cut more uniform slices of strawberries.

I also like to use firm ripe strawberries.  If they are overripe or too soft they will tend to smash and smoosh rather than slice cleanly.  I hate when that happens and I get threads of strawberries hanging off of the slicer.

It may also help is you take out the center stem before you slice them.  I have a video on how to do that using a straw.

I hope this tip to use an egg slicer to slice strawberries works well for you.  I know I use it whenever I need sliced strawberries.

Mason Jar Infuser Review

As you well know, my Genny is pretty serious in her quest to get healthy.  I never thought she would stop drinking diet mountain dew but she quit cold turkey.

I figure that I should do something to support her, especially since I now know exactly how serious she is.

I figure that the best way I can show I am thinking about her goals and how I can help her is to find a replacement for her favorite drink.  To do that I looked to infused waters.  Then I found this Mason Jar Infuser lid.

The lid fits on a mason jar and has a compartment under it that holds fruit under the water so that you can infuse the water with some of the fruit taste without a lot of the sugar.

Cucumber water has long been a favorite of many celebrities and now my wife can have the benifits of it without being too fancy.

All she has to do is slice up her favorite fruit and insert a few slices in the Mason Jar Infuser, fill the jar with water, close the lid, and wait.

She can do this before bed and have a drink ready to go in the morning.

She loves it and I get supportive husband points.

How Shooting Stance Impacts Recoil Control

Shooting Stance Training Tip

I love firearm training, especially instructor courses.

When running an instructor course I get to meet the best kind of people – smart, dedicated, and proficient shooters. Not only is it great fun, but I get to talk with people with all sorts of backgrounds.

I learned about the 300 blackout on a break at a course, got to discuss suppressors with a manufacturer, and today I get to share some training from a new NRA Pistol Instructor. We started talking and after class we decided to do a little video work.

The instructor in the video is Marcus Talley from Veteran’s Tactical in Mississippi.  He is not far from my land in Waynesboro TN and I hope to have him come teach on occasion.

In the video he is giving an example of why proper stance is important for accurate shooting and good follow-up shots.

If the shooter tenses up as they shoot multiple shots can get the shooter rocking, but too loose makes for a slow second shop.

A good balance where your body can absorb the recoil but not be taken too far off the target is optimal, and his tip of having a second shooter tap you hand while in stance can help you find that balance point.
