Recipe: Emergency Baby Formula

I am happy to say, we are out of Baby Formula Stage, little W.T. is getting bigger, so much so that we are now giving him much more water than milk, but when in we transitioned him off of breast milk, I looked up several recipes for “Emergency Baby Formula” I found this one from Prepared Not Scared to be the best.

There is some controversy over this, as Breast Milk and Formula both have more “optimal nutrients” but many generations of babies were successfully raised on this or similar formulas (or even goats milk) – as with anything – use your own common sense and research.  I am not a doctor, so I am not qualified or legally able to give you advice on what is best for your baby.

I will tell you, if it was this or nothing, it there is no question that I would choose to feed my child something like this rather than let them starve. Also, remember, cow’s milk is not readily digestible by young babies, hence the need for formula in the first place.  You can’t give a baby cow’s milk and expect them to thrive because the high protein is more than an infant’s kidney’s can handle.  Cow’s milk also does not have the right amounts of iron and vitamin C to fill your infant’s needs.

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup plus 2 Tbsp. Instant Powdered Milk OR 1/4 cup Non Instant Powdered Milk
  • 1 1/2 cup Boiled Water
  • 1 Tbsp. Oil
  • 2 tsp. Sugar

Procedure

  • Mix powdered milk and water together.
  • Blend thoroughly.
  • Add oil and sugar.

If baby bottles are not available, milk can be spoon fed to an infant.

TNGun started as a firearm school where David Nash taught Tennessee handgun carry permit and armed security courses, but as David evolved and matured this site morphed into the Shepherd School and began to teach more than just guns.  The video below is the YouTube fan finder ad for the tngun channel.

The TNGun website showcases all of the Shepherd School YouTube videos in a way that is much easier to search than they are on YouTube.   Besides the videos we have articles and hundreds of free downloads.

The goal of this site is to help people become better prepared and to pass the message that stuff is not enough – you have to have skills and knowledge to complement gear.

I don’t claim to have the best way to do things, and many of my projects are rigged together and make experts in that specific area scream, but they are all real and unedited – and if something does not work I don’t hide it.

I appreciate all the people who visit this TNGun website, my students, and the friends that have helped me grow and do the things I do.  This website is more than just words on a screen, it is my life.

4 Uses of Dry Ice

Most often I use Dry ice to seal up plastic buckets with bulk food, but there are a lot more dry ice uses a guy can do.

You can also use dry ice to force carbonate beverages, but if you do this it can cause the bottle to explode so be careful.

I have also used it to make fog (which is not a prepper use I guess)

Something else I find to be a fun on of the dry ice uses is if you put cubes of dry ice into a container of rubbing alcohol the CO2 will super chill the alcohol making an extremely cold liquid that replicates some of what liquid nitrogen can do.

Prepper Pete

Book Review: Prepper Pete

I recently got the opportunity to review a very interesting book from Kermit Jones Jr.

This military Chaplain and father of 4 young children needed to figure out how to introduce the concept of personal preparedness to his daughters without scaring.

In this book Kermit uses the old prepper analogy of prepared ants to explore the concepts of prepping through the life of one particularly smart  ant named Pete.

In Pete’s travels he and his family decide they need to prepare and in a simplistic and non-judgmental way they store food, learn skills, and prepare for a variety of unknown and known disasters.

What I like most about the Prepper Pete series is the message. Prepper Pete says “Some people prepare because they are afraid. Our family doesn’t have to be afraid… because we are prepared!

This is a fun way to introduce kids to the work of preparedness by showing them that preparedness is based out of common sense and love rather being a crack-pot thing to hide.

I have read this book to my Son, and I look forward to discussing it with him as he gets older, but right now all he wants to talk about is “me milk” and “down please”.

The Duffle Blog is one of my favorite websites, however I have noticed (sometimes with glee) that sometimes the satire found on their site gets picked up by “mainstream” media and published as real news.

Since I get such a kick out of their humor and love of the Military, I thought should I attempt at making a funny video for prepping? – of course both my wife and my higher brain function said no, but If I let common sense stop me I would lose about 75 percent of my ideas for future videos.  Thats prepper life at my house, doing videos that I think are neat that I think will help me in the future.

Since some people cannot tell, I have to say the video below is my lame attempt at humor – I don’t force my wife to watch tremors and eat MRE’s for date night (I am too busy prepping and shooting videos to waste time on date night).

I do, however, look at Burt Gummer’s gun safe as the ideal – since I will never surpass Mad Mike Williamson and own more guns that the nation of Barbados.

My wife did not think my joke was funny, but it took her a second to get it, she is not used to me trying  to be funny.  Unfortunately she says I am too serious and don’t take time to have fun – which is a shame, because I would like to, I just forget to take my own advice sometimes as I spend all my time working to better my family’s life rather than take time to enjoy it.

But at least the boy helps me with that – if I spend too much time on the computer he always comes gets me…
