Kitchen DIY: Egg Slicer as Strawberry Dicer

Kitchen DIY: Use an Egg Slicer to Slice Strawberries

This is an easy tip that is pretty self evident.  I sometimes have to cut up strawberries into slices.  Most often for my brandied strawberries.  I don’t like doing it, so I use an egg slicer to slice strawberries.

The process is stupidly simple, and it takes no time at all to do.  However, a strawberry is a little harder to slice than an egg, so you may want to stay away from the cheapest level of egg slicers.

I like an all metal version like the one pictured.  I find they are just a little stronger and cut more uniform slices of strawberries.

I also like to use firm ripe strawberries.  If they are overripe or too soft they will tend to smash and smoosh rather than slice cleanly.  I hate when that happens and I get threads of strawberries hanging off of the slicer.

It may also help is you take out the center stem before you slice them.  I have a video on how to do that using a straw.

I hope this tip to use an egg slicer to slice strawberries works well for you.  I know I use it whenever I need sliced strawberries.

Recipe: Egg Drop Soup

Recipe: Egg Drop Soup

Here is an Asian inspired Egg Drop Soup that is very simple to make and uses one of the perfect homestead proteins sources – eggs.

This is a very economical recipe that contains few ingredients in the base, but allows you to add more ingredients based upon your desires.

Egg drop soup is just eggs added to a boiling chicken broth. The eggs cook almost immediately when added to the hot broth and create thin strands in the flavorful liquid.

Many times egg drop soup is just seasoned with salt, pepper and a little green onions.

Here in America we often add corn starch to make it thicker.

Since both eggs and chicken stock are very nutritious, making this soup is a great source of nutrients. The simple nature and easy digestibility makes it easy to digest so it is a great soup to eat when feeling run down or when dealing with some kind of sickness.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups chicken stock
  • 1/8 tsp ground ginger
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives, chopped
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 3 eggs

Preparation

  • Pour the chicken stock into a large saucepan over a medium-high heat.
  • Add the ginger, chives and salt to the liquid and allow it to come to a boil.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the eggs
  • As the broth continues to boil, use a fork and drizzle the eggs into the pot. The eggs should cook immediately.

This is a little gimmicky, but I had to try the what is called the easiest way to separate egg yolks from egg whites.

You know what: it is….

To do this “amazing” feat of using a bottle to separate egg yolks, you will need a bowl, some eggs, and an empty plastic soda bottle.

How to Separate Egg Yolks From Egg Whites

  • Crack the eggs into the bowl
  • Pick up the bottle, and squeeze the sides to displace the air inside the bottle
  • Move the neck of the bottle to the edge of a yolk
  • Open your hand to let at back into the bottle, and watch the yolk get sucked up inside the bottle.

You can then pour out the yolks into a separate bowl.

As you can see the exactly how this is the easiest way to separate egg yolks in the video below.

Works great, hope it is useful – at the very least is looks cool and gets you style points when cooking with the family on those big holiday dinners…  I have used this in the kitchen on a recipe, and it works well, but it may not save effort of just using the egg shell to egg shell technique.

I want to share ShopDogSam’s video on How to Peel A Hard Boiled Egg With Duck Tape

Wala Shazam – This borders on alchemy. I just found this guy on YouTube, and think he is funny as well as smart.

Get two strips of standard (non fancy camouflage kind) duct tape and affix the tape around each end of the egg, leaving a small gap in the center of the egg and ensuring the two pieces don’t touch.

The next step on How to Peel A Hard Boiled Egg With Duck Tape is to crack the egg shell all the way around the egg.  Work the cracks all the way around the egg.

Once the egg shell is broken loose and the shell is craked, simply pull on the tape and the egg shells will come out leaving a clean boiled egg.

Now it seems like this way is not the most efficient method of peeling eggs as you have to buy the duct-tape, but I don’t think its as bad as the poor hippie country boy jokes about in the video.

However, efficiency aside, this makes the peeling process easier and cleaner, so there is a trade off that many people will gladly do.

Personally, I like feeding my chickens the old egg shells so I don’t use this method, but I love his humor (I think it is intentional humor) So I wanted to share his video.
