The survival still I am reviewing today is a lightweight, portable water purification still that can purify almost any water source from any heat source.

That makes it flexible.  Which is a vital, but often overlooked feature of survival products.

As soon as I saw this still I knew I had to have one, so far this has been the ONLY piece of survival equipment I purchased without needing to do any research.   Understood the science behind the product, and the second I was introduced to the product I knew it was a keeper.

As a matter of fact, my first question was, how many do I need to buy to become a dealer?  The only other question I asked concerned the makeup of the drip tube (the only non stainless steel part in the product).  By the way, the tube is medical grade silicon so it won’t degrade or release dangerous chemicals if it is accidentally exposed to solvents.

I am a true believer in this product, and as time passes I will show videos where we distill various contaminates, and using a variety of heat sources so you can see the versatility.

The Survival Still is a non-electric appliance that uses the science of distillation to purify water by boiling the water and collecting the pure steam leaving any contaminates behind.

Because of the process, distillation allows you to have consistently pure water from virtually any water source, without the use of filters.   There are no moving parts, no filters to clog or replace, and no complicated steps to remember.

The survival still lets you purify water from your swimming pool, a stream or even the ocean, for as long as is needed.  When the disaster (or camping trip) is over, simply wash out the bottom pot and pack away.

    The Survival Still…

    • Permanently supplies high-purity, sterile drinking water.
    • Extremely effective against all types of contaminants.
    • Kills and removes bacteria, viruses and parasites.
    • Is a permanent solution for purifying sea water.
    • Does not need filters, maintenance, infrastructure or a supply chain.
    • Distillation is recommended by FEMA and the Red Cross!

    The power of distillation

As we said earlier, the Survival Still uses the process of distillation.  This process scaled down from nature’s process to purify water.

Nature purifies water through the three-step process of

    1. Evaporation
    2. Condensation
    3. Precipitation.

When water evaporates it cannot hold onto the particulates such as dirt, debris, or heavy metals so these contaminants stay behind while the vapor is pure.

The pure vapor then rises and condenses into clouds. The clouds move inland and release the water as rain. Rain is very pure water and is the source of all fresh water on the planet.

In the same way, distillation produces high-purity water without the need for filters.

    How it works

The Survival Still is designed to be used with standard cooking pots that you already have.

    • To use the Survival Still simply fill a standard soup pot with about a gallon of water and put it on a heat source such as a propane grill, stove top, or campfire.
    • Bringing the water to a boil kills any bacteria and parasites.
    • Contaminants are left in the lower pot, while the pure steam rises and is captured by the Survival Still.
    • The Survival Still rests on top of the bottom pot.
    • A second pot of water sits on top of the Survival Still, for the purpose of cooling the steam back into liquid water.
    • Droplets of pure distilled water then drip down and they flow into a storage container.

Once again, the Survival Still® is a wonderful addition to your preparedness plan, it is rugged enough, effective enough, simple enough, and effective enough to be one of your primary water purification methods, and unlike filters there is nothing to replace or clog.

As an added benefit, the action of condensing the pure steam heats the water in the top pot so that as you purify your drinking water on your campfire you are heating water for hygiene needs – so you are getting multiple benefits from the same device.

I recently was a guest on John Westley Smith’s Destiny Survival Podcast – John runs a very cool site Destiny Survival, and I highly recommend you visiting his site.  We had a good time talking about a variety of preparedness subjects, and I learned a lot from just talking with him.

Destiny Survival is a very good preparedness website – like me, John is documenting what he is doing to become prepared.  His says his websites goal is to “help you and other preppers as I continue along my own preparedness journey. You probably know already that we must prepare for survival in a rapidly changing world. After all, how will we live when life as we’ve known it has changed forever?”

I think that is a very noble mindset, and urge you to take a moment to visit his site.  He has tons of articles on things like goal setting, emergency dental kits, Active shooters, the oathkeepers, and much more valuable information.

He is a very spiritual man, and is great about helping others, he is a writer, homeschooler, radio broadcaster, and all around good guy.

I enjoyed being on his show and look forward to talking with him again.

His show “DestinySurvival Radio” is a weekly podcast covering a variety of topics related to prepping and survival. A new program is released each Thursday, and most shows are roughly an hour long.  He has been doing this a long time and is much more professional at the podcast game than I am.

The show will be live on blogtalk radio at 1pm this afternoon, but as with all PRN shows, you can download it after the show anytime for your convenience.

How to Build a Survival Squirrel Snare

Trapping gives much more meat per unit of energy expended than hunting does. Using snares is a passive activity; you can set several traps in multiple locations and check them once a day leaving you free to do other useful work while still gathering food. Hunting requires active attention; you cannot stalk a deer while tending a signal fire.

Snares are also relatively lightweight, cheap, and easy to pack.

Today’s video shows how to make and use a Survival Squirrel Snare using bailing wire or 20 gauge galvanized steel wire.

A roll of this wire is about $5.00, makes several dozen snares, is relatively lightweight, compact, and can be used for other survival uses.

How to Build a Survival Squirrel Snare

    • Cut a length of wire approximately 18 inches long (length depends on how you are going to attach it).
    • Make a small loop at one end of the wire
    • Run the wire back over itself and through the small twisted loop you made. This makes a larger loop “lasso”. The wire should run freely through the small twisted loop you made at the end of the wire. The loop this forms should be approximately the diameter of a coke can.
    • With the small twisted loop at approximately the “10 o’clock” position, run the free end of your wire snare down and attach it to your squirrel run.
    • The squirrel run is a straight stick relatively free of limbs and 6-10 feet long. It should be about the same thickness as a man’s wrist. This branch has one end resting on the ground, and the other resting on the trunk of a tree. It should intersect the ground at an approximate 45 degree angle.

Is possible you want to pick a tree that has a squirrel nest in it, or is an oak tree – that way squirrels will be naturally drawn to it.

The idea is that a squirrel will choose to run up the stick to get to the tree trunk, as that is easier for them to get on the tree than jumping the 90 degree angle to move from ground to trunk.

If a squirrel runs up the pole they will have to move through the snare. They won’t mind as it looks flexible and they can see through it. As they enter the snare, their head goes in, but their body cannot. The snare tightens around them as they run; they hit the end of the wire and fall off the branch in their struggle.

Be Careful How You Place the Snare

If the wire is placed appropriately, they will hang themselves and will not be able to climb back up.

You can place multiple snares on a single run, just make sure they are all high enough that a snared squirrel will hang free and not touch the ground, and that there is enough space that they cannot touch each other.

I do not know where you live, but obviously you need to look at the game laws in your area. In my state of Tennessee this is illegal, and not something I would do as long as I can go to the grocery for food. But in the event nothing else was available and I would starve otherwise, there are many squirrels in my subdivision (or nearby parks) and they could mean the difference between going hungry or not.
