Kitchen DIY: Use an Egg Slicer to Slice Strawberries

This is an easy tip that is pretty self evident.  I sometimes have to cut up strawberries into slices.  Most often for my brandied strawberries.  I don’t like doing it, so I use an egg slicer to slice strawberries.

The process is stupidly simple, and it takes no time at all to do.  However, a strawberry is a little harder to slice than an egg, so you may want to stay away from the cheapest level of egg slicers.

I like an all metal version like the one pictured.  I find they are just a little stronger and cut more uniform slices of strawberries.

I also like to use firm ripe strawberries.  If they are overripe or too soft they will tend to smash and smoosh rather than slice cleanly.  I hate when that happens and I get threads of strawberries hanging off of the slicer.

It may also help is you take out the center stem before you slice them.  I have a video on how to do that using a straw.

I hope this tip to use an egg slicer to slice strawberries works well for you.  I know I use it whenever I need sliced strawberries.

Mason Jar Infuser Review

Mason Jar Infuser

As you well know, my Genny is pretty serious in her quest to get healthy.  I never thought she would stop drinking diet mountain dew but she quit cold turkey.

I figure that I should do something to support her, especially since I now know exactly how serious she is.

I figure that the best way I can show I am thinking about her goals and how I can help her is to find a replacement for her favorite drink.  To do that I looked to infused waters.  Then I found this Mason Jar Infuser lid.

The lid fits on a mason jar and has a compartment under it that holds fruit under the water so that you can infuse the water with some of the fruit taste without a lot of the sugar.

Cucumber water has long been a favorite of many celebrities and now my wife can have the benifits of it without being too fancy.

All she has to do is slice up her favorite fruit and insert a few slices in the Mason Jar Infuser, fill the jar with water, close the lid, and wait.

She can do this before bed and have a drink ready to go in the morning.

She loves it and I get supportive husband points.

How Shooting Stance Impacts Recoil Control

Shooting Stance Training Tip

I love firearm training, especially instructor courses.

When running an instructor course I get to meet the best kind of people – smart, dedicated, and proficient shooters. Not only is it great fun, but I get to talk with people with all sorts of backgrounds.

I learned about the 300 blackout on a break at a course, got to discuss suppressors with a manufacturer, and today I get to share some training from a new NRA Pistol Instructor. We started talking and after class we decided to do a little video work.

The instructor in the video is Marcus Talley from Veteran’s Tactical in Mississippi.  He is not far from my land in Waynesboro TN and I hope to have him come teach on occasion.

In the video he is giving an example of why proper stance is important for accurate shooting and good follow-up shots.

If the shooter tenses up as they shoot multiple shots can get the shooter rocking, but too loose makes for a slow second shop.

A good balance where your body can absorb the recoil but not be taken too far off the target is optimal, and his tip of having a second shooter tap you hand while in stance can help you find that balance point.

How to Make Fridge Bread Pizza

We fell in love with the artisan fridge bread recipe (at least until I finally broke down and bought a kitchen aide stand mixer) – it makes it so easy to make fresh bread you have to fall in love with it.

Not being able to leave a good thing alone, I had to tinker with the recipe and the recipe uses until I came up with this Fridge Bread Pizza Recipe.

I like big pillowy pizza crust deep dish pizza is my kryptonite.

This is a great recipe for busy nights when you have to throw something together for a hungry family with little time and energy.

While it is so easy you really don’t need written instructions, watch the videos a couple times and try it.  I bet you will find it as worthwhile as I do.

The best thing is, you can make this dough when you have time, and it can sit in the refrigerator until you need it. The longer it sits in the fridge the better the dough gets.  After a week or so it makes an awesome pizza – if you can let it sit that long.

Personally I never can wait that long.

How to Prevent Freezer Burn on Ice Cream

The comments on the video below are consistent in saying that if you have to prevent freezer burn on ice cream you are not eating it fast enough.

That is fair, and maybe people don’t have this problem, but I do because we like to keep ice cream in the freezer as a reward for WT but sometimes I forget it is there.

Freezers tend to pull moisture from items and overtime this causes freezer burn.  It does not necessarily ruin the item, but it does deteriorate flavor and texture .  Additionally things like ice cream can pick up off flavors from other things stored in the freezer.

To prevent this you can easily slip the ice cream in a gallon heavy duty freezer bag.  If you really want to extend the shelf life of ice cream as well as doubly prevent freezer burn on ice cream you can use something like the thrifty vac to vacuum out any air from the bag.

This does not just work for ice cream, you can use it for anything you want to store long term in the freezer.

In my basement deep freeze I have several dozen rabbit skins double bagged in ziplocks until I get enough to turn into a rabbit pelt blanket.  I bet you could even use this to store food in a portable ice maker.
