Tactical Pistol Marksmanship

Gabe Suarez is the real deal when it comes to firearm training. I have read several of his books and articles, and always find something worthwhile to cram into my brain housing group.

Tactical Pistol Marksmanship is no different. It contains good points on selecting the right service gun for your needs, as well as some rules of thumb for what caliber it should be. I particularly found his tips on low light shooting to be useful, as well as the section on malfunction stoppages.

His techniques are not always what is taught, but his explanations are well thought out.  I recommend Tactical Pistol Marksmanship as worth a look.

It is a good book, by a good instructor.

Why You Should Shoot Your Gun AFTER Cleaning it

The title sounds pretty confusing, shoot your gun after cleaning?  Wouldn’t that negate the entire cleaning?

The idea is, that after take apart your gun to clean it, you have to put it back together and perform a function check, but since you don’t actually fire it, you aren’t 100% sure that the gun works.

In several law enforcement courses I have taken I have heard anecdotal stories of an unnamed police officer that has some essential piece inside their pistol break during cleaning at the annual firearm re-qualification, carried the inoperable firearm all year and never knew it did not work until the next year’s range.

I cannot verify the story.  It sounds like a 1 in a million stroke of bad luck.  However, what can it hurt to shoot your gun after cleaning it?

Especially since many glock owners take the marketing hype of glock seriously and never clean their firearms.  Seriously, a single round in a clean gun in modern times won’t impact anything – we aren’t talking about corrosive ammo in a WWII bolt gun.

I do think this is a little on the high odds side of things, BUT – getting in a gunfight is also on the high odds against side of things and I still prepare for it.

Gun cleaning is important and I have several posts on this topic.  If you want to know how to make your own cleaning kit or you want a gun maintenance PDF download, or just some basic information on gun cleaning – I have that information at your fingertips.

Surviving the Economic Collapse

What I really like about Surviving the Economic Collapse is that unlike many prepper books out there, this is not about theory but at about actual things one man did during an actual economic collapse.

He has some interesting things to say about the “wrol” – (Without Rule of Law) mindset -namely that no matter what else fails the government will still exist and will still enforce the laws they choose to enforce.

FerFal is not a native English speaker, and this is a self published book, so there is a few grammatical errors, however, since I care more about the content than its presentation (and my own writing is full of grammatical errors) – I don’t think its that big a deal.

This book has some great tips on what he did to survive, and steps the government of Argentina took toward the same goal. As I mentioned in the video – his gold jewelry tip was worth the price of the book (IMHO).

Surviving the Economic Collapse is one of my favorite prepper books, its not the biggest, or the most in depth, but since Ferfal has lived what he is writing about, I give it extra credence.  In the world of prepping, when mistakes can cost the lives of your loved ones, credibility and first hand knowledge have to count for something.

Sunshine to Dollars

Sunshine to Dollars is a very cool book, it has a great balance of theory with how to advice. I haven’t followed any of the plans in the book my self, but I have used all the concepts to enhance existing projects, and to design new ones.

I really like the concepts in this book, particularly the idea that it is more efficient to use the heat energy of the sun directly – rather than turn the energy into power to be used to create heat later…

The author, Harris, is well known in the preparedness and sustainable living worlds.  He is a frequent presenter and speaker and has written a lot of books of use toward off grid living.  Solar power happens to be his best topic, but I have also enjoyed his work with ethanol fuel production, and plan to give workshops on homestead fuel production at Dual Homestead as soon as I can qualify for a license.

The only thing I have against Sunshine to Dollars is that it took things Harris did, but that may not be available to everyone, and suggest they are universal how-tos.

His example on how to get free solar panels is the most prominent.  I admit his method is ingenious, but I found that after a couple years of trying, it is not quite that easy.

Starving the Monkeys

Of all the non-fiction books I have read, Starving the Monkeys is in the top 5 of books that have influenced who I am and who I am growing into. This is one of the neatest books I have read in a long time.

It is hard to categorize though. I has some of the author’s history that shows where he is coming from and allows you to see the credibility that he brings to the book. Personally he hooked me when he described getting a FFL and running a firearm store from his dorm room at a military service academy.

He gives a very insightful look into the nature of business, employment, and free market, describes the root problem with the way we interact with our Republic, and gives a workable solution.

This book is very well researched and referenced, and gives little asides that lead the reader to do there own research. I am of the opinion that if the reader absorbs this book, and does all the “homework” then they will have the equivalent of a true liberal arts degree (meaning they are well rounded and equipped to work in modern society).

My favorite part, the most entertaining, and what I have gotten the most usage from is his take on Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. Baugh uses fictional cavemen to illustrate the points of the book, and how the free market works. I cannot prove that the work Chicken comes from the caveman husband and wife team of Chi and Ken who first domesticated chubby little birds and kept them in little cages, but it makes sense to me…

In my opinion, if everyone bought this book instead of donating to various political causes, we would get out of this mess we are in a lot sooner, and with a lot less waste. But then again, if everyone read this book, we would be unfit to be lead, and the current crop of politicians would not know what to do without anyone listening to them.
