You might love to carry a knife to your outdoor adventures, but have you given thought about the parts of a knife? After all, it is the sum of the parts that makes the knife strong, the parts dictate the purpose of the knife.

Whether it is a full tang hunting knife or a push tang knife, you need to pay attention to these little details. The tang is that part of the knife, which impacts the strength of the knife. So, let’s get to know the tang of the knife!

THE STORY OF TANG TYPES

Have you heard about the tang? Well, not the powdered drink with a fruity taste! The tang is an essential part of your knife. A fixed blade knife stands no chance if you have brought the wrong tang to hold it in place.  To help you in selection, here is the “Tale of the Tang: The Untold Story of Tangs”.

What your backbone means to you, is exactly what a tang means for the knife! It is basically what keeps the blade attached to the handle. Without the tang, there would nothing holding the two together. Here are some of the tang types usually seen across all knives:

The Full Tang:

A knife that has a full tang will have the tang along the complete length of the handle. It is a knife that is optimal for survival and lifesaving operations. There are both pros and cons to this kind of knife:

Pros:

  • Full tangs are considered to be the strongest option among all the tang types. The simple reason is the fact that the entire length of the handle has the most metal, so the blade, when in use is less likely to bend or break off.
  • As the tang extends into the handle and along the full length, the balance point of the knife falls typically towards the middle, giving the knife better balance and leverage.

Cons:

  • The overall weight of the knife might be a bit more than other tang type knives. If you are procuring your knife from skilled knife makers, then you will be at an advantage, because, many make the tang tapered towards the butt of the handle, to decrease the overall weight of the knife, without hampering its toughness.

Partial Tang:

  • The name is self-explanatory; the tang does not extend the entire length of the knife. This kind of tang is also known as three-quarter tang, half tang and stub tang. The pros and cons include:

Pros:

  • The modern technique of knife making has improved the strength of the knife, but is still less in comparison to the full tang.
  • This kind of knife is quite light to handle and carry.
  • A partial tang improves the option of using various kinds of material for the handle.

Cons:

  • Due to the tang not extending into the knife, leverage is reduced immensely.
  • In extreme conditions, this kind of knife is prone to breaking off.

Push Tang

Also known as rabbeted tang, this kind of tang is pushed into a premade slot within the handle and affixed using a strong adhesive. This kind of tang is found in both varieties full and partial. This kind of tang is characteristic of factory knives. The pros and cons are:

Pros:

  • The price of this kind of knife is lower as the knife need not be finished.

Cons:

  • This kind of knife is considered to be extremely weak and prone to sliding off the handle after prolonged use.

Extended Tang

The tang continues past the end of the knife’s handle. The pros and cons are:

Pros:

  • Provides the knife handle added protection and additional features of acting as a tool for hammering tent stakes and much more.

Cons:

  • It limits the variety of handle material.

Encapsulated tang

In this type, the handle material is moulded around the tang and not pushed on to it, which leads to the following pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Strength is the biggest advantage of this kind of tang.
  • They offer better control over the use of the knife.

Cons:

  • Limits the variety of materials used for the handle.

The other types of tangs include hidden tang, stick tang and many more. You need to understand that each tang will have its fair share of pros and cons, but you need to find a reliable and reputed knife maker. They will always have knives that fit your need and will never disappoint you. Find the tang of your choice and complete your tale of the tang!

Build a Generator From a Lawn Edger Motor

I think it is a cool idea to build a generator from a lawn edger motor, so much so that a few years ago I build a very similar generator from a lawn mower engine.  It works well, and was pretty simple to build

I would imagine, from my experience on the similar project, that a man could do this in a single day if they had the materials close at hand.

The basic generator (gas powered motor, alternator and battery only), can be used as a 12 volt power source. This is extremely useful for charging battery banks in RVs, campers or in out buildings. The big advantage to this generator as a charging system is the high current output of the alternator, and thus, the reduced charge time over using solar cells, or AC battery chargers.

The other big advantage to using this unit to charge batteries over just charging them with a car, is that this generator uses much less gas to do the job (which is critical in an emergency). Some HAM radio folk use 12 volt equipment that can be powered from the battery until it is low in charge, and then crank up the generator to recharge the battery. The high output of this unit also makes it useful for car lots or fleets for jump starting cars.

If a DC to AC power converter is added to the basic system, then a limited amount of 120 Volt AC power would also be available! DC to AC power converters electronically convert the 12 volt DC power to 60 hertz AC power at 120 volts. These boxes just connect to the battery on the generator, and provide AC power outlets for standard household AC power.

Far Beyond Defensive Tactics

Book Review: Far Beyond Defensive Tactics

Far Beyond Defensive Tactics is one of the best defensive tactics books on the market.

I have read, reread, dog-eared, and written in the margins of this book – then went out and bought a new copy just in case.

I have personally used several of the concepts in this book in real life encounters within the walls of state prisons when I worked maximum security after I got out of the Marines.

The information on how to get a combative drunk out from behind the wheel of his car was a story I adapted and used inside the prison to deal with inmates that took over their pie flap (A pis flap is a small fole in the middle of the door that is created to pass items like food trays without opening the door)

His information on keeping cool and controlling the situation – basically not letting the bad guy goad you into bad decisions is also something I use quite often in real life.

Christensen is a thinking man’s warrior, and if you judge a man by those around him, he has collaborated with Lt. Col Grossman and Gaven de Becker.

This book should be in the library of anyone concerned about use of force.

Foxfire 6

Book Review: Foxfire 6

Like Foxfire 9 that we reviewed earlier, Foxfire 6 is a great historical documentary to teach us how our ancestors lived prior to rural electrification.

This classic book deals with shoemaking, children’s toys, musical instruments, wooden locks, and has a very interesting story of a rural genius that powered a sawmill using salvaged car transmissions, axles, and differentials turned by a waterwheel from his own homemade dam.

This book is not a prepper boor per se, but the mindset of our ancestors is a vital one to recreate is we are to survive any type of long term collapse, depression, or recession

I have several of the foxfire books and have a goal to get the complete set.  I have spent hours and hours as a teenager reading the foxfire books and planning all the things I would do as an adult and was free to explore and create my own little pioneer homestead.

I look forward to the day when I can share the information in this book with my son.  I know little W.T. would love to have a banjo built as described in this book.  I don’t know how his mother would field about a 4 year old with a homemade banjo.  If the sound did not kill her the deliverance jokes probably would.
