My son WT (or as he likes to be called TNTell the YouTuber) has become more and more interested in shooting.  To help guide him appropriately I have been working on skills that can help him be a better shooter.  Namely being more responsible, thoughtful, and to have a greater attention to detail.  Obviously that is hard with a 6 year old, so I try to make it fun.

I got him these 10×42 mm Binoculars to help with the attention to detail.  I want him to learn to observe and just see.  It is my hope that I can both fuel his imagination and raise his observation skills in a fun way by letting him play with some optics.

On to the review:

I did not really expect much from $25.00 optics, but I have to say, these are pretty nice.  They are not toys.  They have easy to use controls with one dial moving both sides together.

Here are some features:

  • Fully coated optics and lightweight BaK4 roof prism for clear, crisp images even in low light or poor light condition
  • Durable rugged rubber housing provides a secure, non-slip hold, and durable external protection.
  • Center Focus Wheel requires minimal rotation for quick sharpness from close up to far
  • Right-eye diopter is adjustable and twist-up eye-cups for comfortable viewing with or without eyeglasses
  • Nitrogen purged for 100% waterproof and fogproof performance. Binoculars comes with neck strap and carry case

Amazon also shows some additional specifications:

  • Magnification: 10 x
  • Objective Lens Diameter: 42 mm
  • Exit Pupil: 4.2 mm
  • Linear Field of View: 293 feet/1000 yards
  • Interpupillary Distance:60-80 mm
  • Height: 5.9 inches
  • Width: 5.2 inches
  • Weight: 21 oz

The 25.99 Package Includes:

10×42 mm Binoculars, a neck strap and attached lens covers, a carry case, a cleaning cloth and a manual.

With my glasses, I had a hard time seeing through the binoculars, it wasn’t that the eye cups were uncomfortable with my glasses, it was the eye relief.  When I raised my glasses the field of view improved.   I am not quite ready to blame the binoculars, but this model was a little harder to use with glasses than some others I have owned.

If you can overlook this, or it does not apply, then these Twod 10×42 binoculars are a great value at the $25.99 price.

William’s First Canoe Trip

Today The wife and I had an adventure taking WT on his first canoe trip.  William’s first canoe trip was rather uneventful, we chose the 2.5 hour trip at Tip a Canoe on Hwy 70 in Kingston Springs TN.  They don’t know I am posting this, and I don’t have any relationship with this company, but every time I have went they have had excellent customer service and I have had a good time.  It is a very inexpensive family day trip.

Its Not as Easy as It Was

Today I also learned that 40 ish 350 pound guy with a rocking dad bod can not do the same things in a canoe that he could do as a young 170 pound boy scout camp waterfront instructor.  The hundreds of miles I canoed in the late 80’s and early 90’s don’t count in the new century….

For some reason, the canoe was more tipsy, and it rode lower to the ground.  Actually, with the low water level the first hour of the ride involved me walking behind the canoe and pushing it off rocks.  WT was not a happy camper.

Later, the river got deeper and we ended up having a great time.  WT said he was willing to do it again and while when given a choice between canoeing and going to Dave and Buster’s arcade he choose canoeing before we went and the arcade AFTER the trip.  I know he was scared, and if you listen to his voice you may be able to tell also, but he got a big hug after because even though the tipsy canoe and the times we got stuck scared him, he never complained and really cowboy’d up.

This really isn’t DIY prepping, but like  have said in other family posts, you have to spend a little time doing things other than dealing with possible future disasters so the people you care about know how you feel and have some fond memories – plus its a sneaky way to build a love of the outdoors and some serious skills so my boy will be a future prepper leader (if he chooses that path.)

Today WT and I show another Nerf item, the AMOSTING Nerf Tactical Vest for Kids.  We have reviewed a lot of Amosting items, and WT and I have had a good time doing so.

One thing positive to say about this set is that WT loves it, right now he had the vest on as he is playing minecraft on the laptop.

One negative thing is that the darts are not nearly as good as the other AMOSTING darts we reviewed a few weeks ago.  These darts tended to have the tips pull out

TNTell's First Airsoft Gun with Safety Rules and 3 Step Draw

TNTell’s First Airsoft Gun with Safety Rules and 3 Step Draw

My son is asking to do more and more YouTube videos, If he thinks no one is around he will even narrate his own “videos” by acting like he is on camera. He has even talked his momma into taping him while I am work.  I am happy to support him trying to do something productive, and when I can bring gun safety into it its even better.

He has been asking to get his first airsoft gun and I told him that if he shows me he is responsible by helping around the house, learns his 4 fundamental gun safety rules, and can properly execute a three step draw I would let him have his own airsoft gun and the bb’s to go with.

When he said he was ready we taped him giving the rules and the draw.

He’s not perfect, but he is 6 and I am proud of the effort.  A few hours before he “helped” me mow by holding on to the mower and pushing with me.  It was much more effort on my part with the help, but I had to try not to laugh as everytime he pushed he went “vrrrrooom” under his breath.

TNTell’s Homemade Airsoft Target

My son has been working toward showing he is responsible enough to earn an airsoft gun, so in this video he makes a homemade airsoft target for his new tool out of a cardboard box, old grocery sacks, and some duct tape.

My boy is not new to guns, as soon as the ultrasound showed gender I bought him his first gun, I only waited to see if I should get a wood one or a pink one.  He owned a red ryder BB gun about 14 years younger than I got my first BB gun (I was 15).

But this is the first gun (besides Nerf) that I let him have ammunition for.

He had to show he was responsible, and I was able to get him to do quite a bit of chores but in the end, he earned it.

And if he was going to have something that shoots he needed a safe place to shoot it.

This is a very simple target that works well with Airsoft.  As long as you don’t get too close to the target the 6mm airsoft rounds easily penetrate the cardboard but are slowed by the wadded up plastic bags so the rounds don’t exit the box.
