Clint Smith is an expert on the use of Defensive Firearms.  He is a Marine Corps Infantry vet, SWAT officer, and has been running Thunder Ranch since 1993.

Since I Graduated high school in 1993 I readily admit that he has probably forgot more about defensive firearms use than I know.  And that’s okay with me as I haven’t stopped learning yet.  This video is a great tool use to learn some great concepts and proper mindset on the proper use of a defensive firearm.

I like his style, this thought process, and how he teaches.  When I teach firearms classes, there are several techniques and lessons that I share that I gleaned from Mr. Smith.

I have searched YouTube for good training videos to share, and I have found several clips of Thunder Ranch training videos.  Think of them as advertisements for their full length training videos.  (I don’t gain anything from this, but I do think there videos are a valuable and worthwhile purchase.)

Clint Smith is entertaining, but his content is unparalleled.  I love watching him and have used many of his videos to influence my training style.  Its good to be entertained as you are educated.

As a family man home defense is very important aspect of my preparedness planning.  Personal Protection in the Home was one of the first NRA courses I got certified to teach, and it is remains a priority to me as I age.

The Citizen’s Guide to Surviving Police Encounters

This video was created by a lawyer to give the viewer tips on how to deal with police.  It’s name, “The citizen’s guide to surviving police encounters” is a very accurate summary of it’s content.

It is not a lawyer video for thugs, nor does it help if you are guilty, but it does provide valuable information for innocent citizen’s whose instincts for helping and cooperating with government officials may lead them into trouble.

If a policeman is talking to you about a crime they may suspect you, the courts have ruled a law enforcement officer can lie to you, they can use anything you say against you, and cannot use anything that you say that may help you to help you.

When teaching self defense, and especially armed self defense I try to incorporate many of the concepts in this video as they are standard to the field.  This is not rocket science and the video does not show anything new or groundbreaking to those in the know, but much of what it teaches is not commonly known to the millions of honest law-abiding citizens that are just trying to mind there own business and help out when asked.

I’m not a lawyer so don’t believe me – Just watch BUSTED: The Citizen’s Guide to Surviving Police Encounters.

Don’t Talk to Police After a Shooting?

If you carry a handgun for self defense you owe it to yourself to watch this video.  Don’t Talk to Police sets forth some essential knowledge to protect yourself after a use of force incident.

This goes in the face of a lot of what seems to be common thought.

Good guys have nothing to fear from the police, Good guys talk to the police, only the bad guys have to worry about self-incrimination.  Pleading the fifth is saying I’m guilty.

While I am extremely pro-police and work within the system, I think some of this needs to be investigated.

The 5th Amendment was designed to protect the innocent from being tortured into confession.  However, I feel how you do that is important.  I wrote about this earlier in what to do after a shooting.

Police have the ability to lie to you, the Supreme Court and multiple lower courts have ruled this way over the years.

What you may not know is that whatever you say to the police cannot be used for you.  Any statements that help your case is hearsay and the cop is not allowed to testify for you, but everything you can will be taken and used against you.  Why would you make statements.

Travis Tomasie World’s Fastest Reload

Travis Tomasie is a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit, he gets to spend his days practicing, competing, and teaching firearm usage.  He was not born with the skill to throw a magazine into a handgun with amazing speed and accuracy – he earned his ability through lots of practice.  If you want the world’s fastest reload then you need to get up off the computer grab an unloaded handgun and some magazines – stand over your bed (so the magazines can fall to an place you can quickly pick them up) and practice practice practice.

If you want to beat Travis Tomasie on the world’s fastest reload it is simple:

When your hands get tired – keep practicing

When you wife (or husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, momma, father, dog, best friend) gets frustrated at the time you spend – keep practicing

When you feel the urge to stop – keep practicing

If you practice perfect form, start slow, stay smooth, and speed up only when your skill increases you WILL get this fast.

Having a fast reload is not rocket science, it is pure muscle memory that you earn by doing.  No one can give you this skill, it can’t be taught or bought.  Good coaches can help but you have to earn speed by long hours of going slow and getting it right.
