char clothI like mixing traditional survival skills and technology with the science and technology of modern times. While there are many modern ways to light fire, being able to use flint and steel or other older tech has its uses.

Char cloth is a traditional tender that you can make yourself – it’s basically just cloth charcoal…

In order to make it you will need a tin of some sort it just has closeable lid that is relatively airtight

When you get your tin (I used an Altoids container) you need to punch a small hole in the top with a small nail

Procedure to Make Char Cloth

  • Cut the cloth (100% natural cloth – no plastic like nylon or polyester) in squares and layer them in the can – it is important not to pack them in too tightly.
  • Light a small fire and set the can over the coals. You will soon see smoke billowing out of the can, this is expected. When there is no more smoke coming out take it out of the fire, but DO NOT open the lid off right away. If air hits the carbonized cloth while it is hot oof the fire, it may burst into flames.
  • Remove the lid
  • If your cloth looks brown you did not cook it enough – put it back and start over
  • If it crumbles when you touch it, then you over cooked it and you need to try again.
  • If it is black, soft, and somewhat pliable then you did a good job.
  • Any kind of spark will cause it glow red with a hot ember, which will allow you to add tinder, blow on the spark, and light a fire.

6 Benefits of Converting Small Engines to Propane

Benefits of Converting Small Engines to Propane

Some of my projects are done “just because”, others are experiments or learning exercises, but some – like this one – actually has tangible benefits.  So lets talk about the benefits of converting small engines to propane.

The self reliant gain several advantages when converting small engines to LPG from gasoline.  Some tout the ecological benefits, but I am going to focus only on the tangible things that make daily life easier for a prepper.

Easy to Store

Unlike gasoline propane can be stored forever!  It is much easier to buy a 20 pound LPG tank and store it in a shed than messing with additives and rotating gas.  Gasoline can only be stored for a couple of months and fuel stabilizers don’t work well with ethanol gasoline.

Easy to Refuel Hot Equipment

Propane is not spilled like gasoline when refueling. This makes refueling simpler and safer.  You don’t risk a fire when gas hits a hot engine, and you don’t have to wait for the generator to cool – you also don’t have to mess with funnels or other tools.  Simply screw in another tank and start the engine right up.

Engines Last Longer

While propane does have less BTU’s of energy than gasoline, so more propane is needed to power an engine than running the engine on gasoline, but less energy is waster when burning propane – the engine run cooler contributing to a longer engine life.

Does Not Gum Up Carbs

Not only does the cooler operating temperatures extend engine life, propane does not gun up carbs like gasoline, nor does it deposit carbon on the piston heads.  You get a longer service life on engine oil and don’t have to worry about rebuilding carburetors.  As a matter of fact, in my experience when first converting a small engine, you get black exhaust from the propane helping remove deposits.

Is Not Corrosive to Seals and Gaskets

Propane does not absorb water like ethanol fuels, nor is it corrosive to seals and gaskets like ethanol fuels are.

Easy to Transport

Propane in the 20 or 100 pound cylinders is also much easier to transport than the equivalent amount of gasoline.

Next up is how to actually convert an engine using a kit from propanecarbs.com.  I also have a post on how to convert your generator to electric start.

The Backyard Blacksmith: Traditional Techniques for the Modern Smith

The Backyard Blacksmith takes the mystery out of blacksmithing, but not the magic…There is an increasing interest and revival in the art of blacksmithing as a hobby and art, and both men and women are becoming at-home blacksmiths. Blacksmithing is a simple, rewarding craft anyone can enjoy in their backyard or home workshop — even beginners can produce useful and beautiful projects on their first try.

The Backyard Blacksmith shows you how blacksmithing can be easy to learn, and a rewarding hobby, with some patience and a working knowledge of metals, basic tools, and techniques. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges, and handles, and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.

This book has really helped me learn about blacksmithing.  While right now I am working out of a basement and have to set up and take down a collection of rigged up tools, one day I plan on having a full time set up so I can beat metal whenever the urge hits me.

I hope that one day my son WT will learn to be a skillful metalworker.

Grill Master Gloves Review

Gear Review: Grill Master Gloves

I have had a good time lately reviewing products, I get to play with stuff I normally would not buy and I get to share my opinions with you.  These grill master gloves are no exception.

I probably would not have bought these gloves on my own, but after cooking with them, I realized how much I was missing.

These gloves are thick and sturdy.  They are a little tight on my large hands, but they are surprisingly comfortable.  They make cooking with my cast iron skillet much easier.

Grill master gloves do not compare to regular oven mitts – you have the dexterity to work without taking them off, and the gripping ridges give a good hold on heavy cast iron pans or grills.

Since they are rated to above 900 degrees Fahrenheit, you could even use them in casting lead (however if you are going to do that buy another pair as food and lead should only meet at during hunting season.

I did get these Grill Master Gloves at reduced cost in exchange for an honest review, but based on the quality and how useful they are, when I wear these out, I will buy myself another set.
